Local gun organizations respond to mass shootings :: 08/06/2019
PITTSBURGH - Two gun rights organizations denounced the mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton this weekend, but they also denounced new gun laws as a remedy to deter future massacres.
Open Carry Pennsylvania founder Jason Dillon says gun-free zones should be eliminated to allow legal gun owners to carry firearms and be ready to respond to life-threatening incidents before police arrive.
"When seconds count and the police are only minutes away, we as gun owners would rather have our firearms on us so that we can take the appropriate actions to not only protect ourselves but our family," Dillon said.
Kim Stolfer, president of Firearms Owners Against Crime, said mental health should be addressed more urgently than ever before.
"The answer is really looking at the heart and soul, the mind of these people, and also at whether or not we don't play a part as a culture in fostering this by not controlling people's attitudes," Stolfer said.
"How can you glorify the use of violence and demean the human personality and a human being without having an impact?"
Stolfer also expressed sadness over the the lives lost during the two shooting sprees.
"I was aghast. I was totally depressed about the suffering there," he said.
