Local Congressman: Let Troops Carry Weapons On Military Installations :: 07/19/2015

U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, says shootings at military installations such as the one Thursday in Chattanooga, Tenn., that left four Marines dead could be prevented if troops were allowed to carry concealed weapons.

“There have been far too many incidences where we have had to mourn the loss of a soldier or civilian due to shootings on military bases. These events could have been prevented,” he said.

"In May, an amendment I proposed passed the House and was included within the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to allow service members to conceal carry on military installations,” he said.

“After the tragedies at fort Hood. Hood, I saw the need to empower installation commanders to decide what policy is best and who should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon for their personal or force protection,” he said.

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush echoed the sentiment Friday.

He said a ban on carrying guns in military recruiting offices should be lifted.

He made the comments Friday during a town hall-style event in Carson City, Nev., a day after a gunman killed four Marines and wounded a sailor and another Marine at a pair of military facilities in Chattanooga.

Bush says military bases and recruiting offices are symbolic targets for terrorism and arming people there may deter attacks.

The former Florida governor says law-abiding citizens who have the right to self-defense make the world safer.

He noted that Florida has both a high rate of concealed carry weapon permits and falling crime rates.
