Lee Catching Heat Over Gun Grab Attempt :: 02/08/2021

The efforts of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee have already been documented here. She wants to enact draconian levels of gun control to such a degree that the Second Amendment would cease to protect the right to keep and bear arms. Jackson Lee’s bills would instead turn guns into a privilege that you’d have to count yourself lucky to enjoy.

Frankly, she managed to hit every gun community concern just short of outright confiscation.

As such, it’s unsurprising that there’s some…resistance to her efforts.

Republicans fear the removal of foundational rights as Democrats seized control of the House and Senate. A recent bill proposed by Democrat Representative Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) would mandate the registration of all guns to a national database maintained by the ATF.

Skeptics doubt the legislation would have its intended effect, pointing out most criminals already use unregistered weapons. Some believe the gun registrar would actually be used to confiscate guns in the future.

Overall, the proposed bill could disqualify many would-be gun owners and infringe upon Second Amendment rights.

Honestly, this is an ambitious gun grab, but you know who else is less than pleased with Jackson Lee’s proposal?

HR 127 was introduced on January 4, 2021. In more than a month, it’s gotten zero co-sponsors. Not Rep. Eric Swalwell, not Rep. Lucy McBath who won her seat on the back of her anti-gun activism, none of the notable anti-gun House members have co-sponsored the bill.

Now, that doesn’t mean they disagree with the notion by any stretch. What it does suggest, though, is that even anti-gun Democrats know there’s no hope in hell of this passing and the American people just rolling over and accepting it.

Especially since Jackon Lee’s bill would require an interview with someone like an abused woman’s husband before she could obtain the means to defend herself from that husband.

The truth is, no one wants to deal with the optics on that one. Not yet, anyway.

The difference, though, is that while Republicans will blast this legislation, Democrats are silent. They won’t support the bill by co-sponsoring it, but they won’t actually denounce the bill, either. Whether that’s because they just feel it’s too far or just too far for the moment is somewhat irrelevant.

If there’s an upside to this attempt by Jackson Lee, it’s a reminder that while Democrats may control both the legislative and executive branches, they don’t control them to such a degree that they think they can get away with this kind of law. No, they know passing such a measure would bounce them from Congress so fast that they’d break the sound barrier.

But Jackson Lee didn’t propose this bill on a lark. She really wants to see this pass, and I’ll bet a whole lot of her fellow Democrats would sign onto this bill in a heartbeat if they thought they could get away with it.

Please, make it a point to tell your member of Congress that you oppose this bill and don’t want to see it become federal law.
