Kentucky Self-Defense: ‘You’ve gone too far’: Family seeking ‘justice’ after dispute with neighbors ends in gunfire :: 04/05/2021

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (WYMT) - Troopers with Kentucky State Police Post 9 responded to a call in Pike County Sunday after a complaint of shots being fired.

KSP troopers and investigators responded to a home on Chloe Road, where officials said a property dispute between neighbors lead to a man being shot.

According to members of the Coleman family, contention has been brewing with their neighbors since 2019. But, when Jerry Coleman recently began digging a ditch to re-route water that his family said was pouring near his yard as his neighbors washed their vehicles, the issue of the property lines hit its boiling point. The neighbors claimed the property to be theirs while Coleman disagreed.

Surveillance video from the property shows five people get out of a pickup truck and attack Coleman and his wife, Pam. In the video, one of the female attackers hits Pam in the head before two other women rush to attack as well. Jerry, who is also shown being attacked by two men, then appears to draw a small firearm and fire at one of the attackers, hitting him in the arm.

“They have done all kinds of stuff to my dad,” said Coleman’s daughter. “This has been ongoing harassment. We’ve called the police 10 times, but they said they couldn’t do anything because it was a civil matter.”

After things went from verbal to physical, Jerry’s son, Chris Coleman, said that was where he drew the line.

“It was probably close to 12 o’clock or something like that and I get a text from my dad and the only thing he put in it was ‘help,’” said Chris. “He called me that day and said they put hands on him and Pam.”

Chris said he got to his father’s side and later watched the video footage.

“Now you’ve gone too far. He’s not able to fight,” Chris said. “If it wouldn’t have been for my dad pulling the gun and defending himself, how long would the beating have went on?”

Officers said David Taylor was taken to the Pikeville Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries after being shot in the arm. Jerry Coleman was also taken to the hospital by ambulance for non-life-threatening injuries.

The remaining neighbors were arrested and taken to the Pike County Detention Center. All five are from Pikeville, police identified them as 51-year-old Teresa Taylor, 29-year-old Amber Chaney, 31-year-old Briteny Johnson, 31-year-old Joshua Chaney, and 56-year-old David Taylor.

The Colemans say they are now just hoping for “justice” and an end to the fighting.

The investigation will be presented to the Pike County Grand Jury for additional charges.
