Kentucky Self-Defense: Woman admits to shooting in southwest Louisville, claims self-defense :: 07/11/2019

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It was just after 3 a.m. Tuesday when neighbors on Patricia Drive, off Cane Run Road, woke up to the sound of gunfire.

Gail, who asked her last name not be used, said she first heard three shots: "And then I heard two more, so I came to the door and looked out. There were three people on the porch, screaming at each other."

Gail saw a woman lying outside her neighbor's home and called 911.

Police say Cicley Herring, 35, later admitted to shooting the victim. She made her first court appearance Wednesday morning.

Arguing for a lower bond, attorney Nick Neumann told the judge, "I think it's clear there's going to be two sides to this story."

Neumann said his client had acted in self-defense. He said Herring and another woman, friends according to police, got into an argument at a club at 26th and Broadway. The situation later escalated outside Herring's home.

"It was her property, there were threats, a person who had followed her home. She had called the police, there was no help, no one there. She's there by herself with someone approaching her with an apparent object, and she did what she needed to do in the end," he said.

Gail said when police arrived, Herring took full responsibility: "She just said, 'I did it. I did,' and then after they handcuffed her, I heard her say, 'I'm sorry,' as they walking her out to the car."

A judge did lower Herring's bond from $100,000 to $25,000. She is set to return to court later this month.

The victim, meanwhile, remains in critical condition at University Hospital.
