Kentucky Self-Defense: Married off-duty cops pause date night to stop masked robber at Raising Cane's :: 02/19/2020

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Police have released surveillance video showing exactly what went down when a masked robber found himself at the wrong place at the wrong time.

According to court documents, Justin Carter, 30, walked into Raising Cane's in the Highlands just before 10 p.m. Saturday wearing a mask and armed with a gun. He then demanded cash from one of the employees.

What he didn't know is that two married off-duty Elizabethtown police officers were enjoying date night in a nearby booth.

The video shows Det. Chase McKeown and his wife, Officer Nicole McKeown spring into action.

"I saw her hands go up and I'm thinking 'Is he doing what I think he's doing?'," Nicole McKeown remembered of watching the terrified cashier.

"We just looked at each other. 'Is this what's going on?' Let's go," Chase McKeown said, "Instincts took over and we just did like we felt we needed to do."

With guns drawn, the pair ran to the armed man, demanding that he drop his weapon. Carter ran out of the building, dropping his gun at the door, but the couple chased after him.

The two took him down in a backyard about a block away on Beechwood Avenue, and waited for LMPD officers to arrive.

"It is my belief, if not for the heroic actions taken by these two officers, the perpetrator's actions inside the business would have escalated," LMPD Detective Dan Mason said.

Arrest records say that Carter's firearm was stolen from the Jeffersontown area. He remains at Metro Corrections on a $50,000 cash bond.
