Kentucky Self-Defense: Charges are pending against a suspect who is recovering at University Hospital from a gunshot wound. :: 01/27/2016

Louisville Metro Police said a man with a knife approached a woman downtown Tuesday night and said "give me everything you have."  Authorities said that's when the woman pulled out a gun and shot him.

"I think it happened at 6:15, 6:30, which is the time lots of people leave, so it was scary to think that could have been lots of people I know," said Emily Mattingly, who works in downtown Louisville.

Mattingly parks in the same garage at 5th and Liberty, where the incident happened.

"I thought it was really empowering for women, in that she could do that, and that she had the confidence to do that," said Mattingly.

Amanda Kahl also works downtown.  She said Tuesday night's incident is a good reminder to always be aware of your surroundings.

"I carry pepper spray in my purse, it's always where I can reach it," said Kahl.

The suspect who was shot made his way to the PNC Plaza building.  That's where police caught up with him, and he was taken to the hospital.

While charges are pending against him, many are praising the woman who took control of a scary situation.

"You have to protect yourself, being vulnerable, being a woman, you have to really protect yourself, I felt like it was justified," said Pam Stiger, who lives in Louisville.

The suspect is expected to survive. Police said he will be charged when he is released from the hospital.  The woman will not face any charges.
