Karl Rove: I Did Not Suggest Repealing Second Amendment :: 06/23/2015

Conservative operative Karl Rove says he wasn't quoted accurately by people who thought he suggested repealing the Second Amendment to end gun violence in America.

Rove was a panelist on "Fox News Sunday," where he was asked by host Chris Wallace, "How do we stop the violence?" Rove said there isn't an easy answer.

Rove said there might be "some magic law" that would stop the string of gun-related killings in America, but added, "basically the only way to guarantee that we will dramatically reduce acts of violence involving guns is to basically remove guns from society. And until somebody gets enough oomph to repeal the Second Amendment, that’s not going to happen."

He added, however, that repealing the right to bear arms is not the answer in his opinion. Instead, he said, friends and family should have seen the warning signs that 21-year-old Dylann Roof was growing increasingly disaffected and hateful toward black people.

"I wish that some of those people had spoken up and said, 'Here's somebody who is in trouble, and a danger to himself and others,'" Rove said.

After Rove's statement, the Internet lit up with stories that Rove had called for repealing the Second Amendment, but in an appearance on Fox News Channel's "Hannity" on Monday, Rove clarified that he was saying that politicians look for "magic answers" in moments of tragedy at the hands of a gunman.

"I don't think this is an answer," he said. "As I said I went on to describe what I think we ought to be focused about. We had warning signs from this young man. He talked to friends about it, other individuals about it. He went on the Internet and openly explained what he was going to do. Somehow or another we missed those signs. We need more personal responsibility in our society."

More gun laws don't work, Rove added, pointing to Chicago, which has some of the nation's toughest gun laws, but still is "a murder capital."

"It's because when you take away the people's right to keep and bear arms, bad people keep and bear arms. And use them," he said. "So as I said yesterday on 'Fox News Sunday,' this is not an answer.
