Kansas Self-Defense Shooting: Firearm Carrying Football Coach & Wife Who Used Guns in Self Defense Dismissed From Team :: 09/10/2014
We have an update to the story we published earlier in which a youth football coach and his wife used guns to defend themselves from angry parents and family members.
Both the coach and his wife have been relieved of their duties having to do with the team following the incident.
According to Kansas.com,
The coach who was involved in the clash and pulled out a gun after being attacked has been relieved of his coaching duties, Burris said. His wife was also dismissed from involvement with the team.
"He's been a great role model" for kids, Burris said of the coach, who has been with the Tigers for a few years and worked in the league for at least 15 years. " He's really helped."
Despite that background, Burris said, "you can't take weapons out around children."
Both the coach and his wife have concealed carry permits for their weapons, he said.
As we previously reported, police also confiscated the couple's guns following the incident.
ORIGINAL STORY:
A youth football coach was brutally attacked by a group of parents over playing time in a recent football game. The group of parents attacked the coach with brass knuckle's, their fists, and one suspect even pulled a gun on the coach.
Fortunately, the coach's wife was nearby, and she was packing a concealed handgun, which she drew to stop the attack. According to Kansas.com:
One of the men had a set of brass knuckles he used to beat the coach. Seeing the attack, the coach's wife pulled out a gun and fired it into the air.
The coach broke free of his attackers and went to his car for a second gun, which he pointed at various people in the crowd, Espinoza said.
The attackers had all fled the park by the time officers arrived, Espinoza said. The guns used by the coach and his wife were confiscated, but no arrests have yet been made.
It seems odd to confiscate the guns in a situation where no one was shot and the couple isn't facing any charges. In most of the defensive gun uses we've documented, guns were only confiscated for evidentiary purposes if someone is actually shot.
Also, I'm not an advocate of warning shots. Generally speaking they are dangerous and carry a large amount of liability, especially when fired into the air. However, in this case the attack does seem to have been stopped by the shot.
