Kahr Firearms officially opens in Pike County (PA) :: 08/12/2015

The gun maker, which broke ground on the 40,000 square-foot building in May 2014, marked progress in its move to Pennsylvania.

A lion and jaguar fighting over wounded antelope was the dramatic, taxidermy scene greeting about 200 guests at the grand opening of gun maker Kahr Fire Arms Tuesday in Blooming Grove.

Kahr owner Justin Moon shot the animals while on safari about 10 years ago.

The company broke ground on the 40,000 square-foot building in May 2014 after purchasing the 600-acre business park on Well Road for $2 million in 2013, to expand and move it’s entire operation out of New York state.

Moon said the move was to avoid political stances against guns, and he said he finds Pennsylvania friendlier and more welcoming, and that he was happy about the choice of Pike County.

“Half the population are NRA members,” he said, laughing, adding that he felt the company was a great fit for the area.

The gun maker will employ 50 to 60 workers eventually, Moon said.

Currently the corporate office crew is in the building and research and development and the engineers will be moving to the Pike facility in the fall.

An outlet store should open sometime in 2016. By the end of 2016 manufacturing will begin in the space, Frank Harris, company spokesman said.

The guns are being manufactured in Massachusetts and Minnesota right now, Harris said.

The building also includes two underground, 100-yard firing ranges for the company's own use and will be used in research and development. The underground range won't bother neighbors and can be used in all weather.

The company will become part of the community,Moon said, and it has already made contributions to local charities and events.

Before Moon took the stage, Col. Robert DeSousa, state director for Sen. Pat Toomey , U.S. Rep. Thomas Marino and Pike County County Sheriff Phillip Beuki spoke.

"What he started here is only the beginning," Marino said, after reading a part of the second amendment.

Beuki handed over state licenses for the facility to operate.

During the grand opening invited guests could take a glance at the types of guns that Kahr Firearms Group manufactures, including Tommy Gun and Desert Eagle. Five Kahr handguns were given away as part of a raffle.

Guests were treated to a lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers, and were welcome to tour the facility.

Names of new roads constructed in the business park are officially part of the county record, Tommy Gun Lane, Kahr Drive and Desert Eagle Avenue.

The business park has several other lots that could be used for other companies. Kahr's five-year plan is to fill the park with other, firearm industry companies.
