It's clear: We're at war :: 06/16/2016

For the left, tragedies like Orlando can be prevented by more gun control. I'm a veteran, and I've been around firearms all my life. I believe, as my father and my military trainers taught me, that having a weapon is a solemn responsibility. Those who are not fit and those who abuse this responsibility should be prohibited and/or punished as the law provides.

However, France has among the most stringent gun control laws in the world, as does Belgium. This fact did not stop the massacres in those countries, but it did prevent their law-abiding citizens from defending themselves. Florida has among the most liberal gun laws in our nation, yet prohibited guns in the establishment where this tragedy took place. One armed guard outside the building was insufficient to stop the attack. What might have changed if only 10 or 15 of the 300 nightclub patrons, each properly trained and licensed, had been carrying a weapon for self-defense?

We are at war with radical Islam and our elected officials and citizens better get used to it. We can start by calling it what it is, radical Islam, not what it isn't, workplace violence or some other meaningless euphemism. We cannot wish this war away.

If our government is serious about “if you see something, say something” then Congress needs to pass legislation that protects vigilant citizens from retaliatory frivolous litigation and demonization as racists.
