Indiana Self-Defense: Woman scares off late-night burglar by waving gun :: 11/04/2014
INDIANAPOLIS - A mother who woke up to a burglar in her house overnight didn't hold back trying to protect her family. The woman found a man inside her home on Eastern Avenue on the east side of Indianapolis. Her family woke up to the sound of breaking glass at 3 a.m.
"He had to stick his hand up and unlock it. That's the only thing I can think of," said the victim, Marta.
She showed Eyewitness News how the man got into her home overnight. Her family was fast asleep until the noise started.
"Banging at the door, like he was breaking the window. Actually, I was asleep and my cousin heard the noise, so she was yelling at me," Marta said.
First, she investigated from the top of the stairs. Fearing the worst for her sleeping children, Marta started asking questions.
"I yelled down the stairs, 'Who's down there?'," she said. "He told me, 'The police.' As I ran down the steps and I was going to shoot my gun, it jammed up on me."
Once jammed, Marta said the bullets popped through the chamber, unfired. That allowed the burglar to get away, carrying her flat screen TV.
Marta and her family moved to Eastern Avenue a year-and-a-half ago. She never imagined waking up to someone stealing their belongings.
"My kids are scared. But I am kind of shook up, because I am a single mom and living here at home with my two kids," she said.
In the end, Marta is thankful no one got hurt in the break-in, including the burglar. For now, their older tube television will have to do.
"Although the burglar got away with the family's television, they are concerned the same burglar may return, so they are keeping an eye out for each other even more.
