Indiana Self-Defense: Resident, suspected intruder shot during attempted home invasion on Indianapolis' south side :: 02/07/2017

INDIANAPOLIS -- A resident and a suspected home intruder were both shot during an attempted home invasion on Indianapolis' south side.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the area of East Hanna Avenue just before 5 p.m. Monday.

Police say two people were rushed to the hospital with apparent gunshot wounds. They believe one of those was the suspected intruder, and the other was the person living in the home.

"The resident and the suspect exchanged gunfire. One of the residents was shot, and one of the suspects we believe was shot," said IMPD Officer Jim Gillespie.

Both men were taken to the hospital. Their conditions and identity have not been released.

People who live in the neighborhood say they weren't shocked to hear about the shooting.

"My first thought was, I'm not surprised," said Mary Pierce who lives in the apartment complex. "It's a tough neighborhood."

Daija Williams said her boyfriend was inside when the shots were fired and may have returned fire. She believes the break-in was random.

"I'm still shaken up because I don't know what to think, and I don't know how safe we're going to be from now on," said Daija.
