Indiana Self-Defense: Police leaning toward self-defense after woman shoots, kills ex-boyfriend :: 03/05/2015

Police were no strangers to the apartment at 5844 W. 25th street in Speedway. Police were dispatched to the building again for what would be the most devastating call yet.

Just after 4 o’clock Wednesday morning a woman called 911 claiming her ex-boyfriend was trying to force his way inside her apartment–she told police she had a gun. When police arrived the had been shot dead near the entry of the home.  Neighbors were starting to react to the news of what happened.

“It makes me really scared. I have a roommate and we’re both girls and we live alone and we don’t have a gun to defend ourselves,” said Mira Yanni.

The woman was inside the home with her two young daughters. Police say the girls were asleep during the shooting and they were unharmed. Police tell us they’ve responded to two other calls here involving the male and female–the most recent call just a couple of weeks ago for a welfare check of the children.

“Preliminary it looks to be a self defense but with any case of this magnitude we still have to confer with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office with the information the detectives have. See what they have, let them review the case and see if there’s anything there that would look a little different than a self defense case,” said Lt. Trent Theobald of the Speedway Police Department.

The woman is not being held in police custody. Meanwhile this case is causing others to think if they could have defending their home in a similar situation.

It makes you wonder. You know, I think women do need guns. Especially if you live by yourself. But even if you don’t live by yourself you need the protection,” said Gwendolyn Pitts.

Speedway police have not released the names of the male and female involved. They believe the deceased male isn’t from the area and they’re working to notify his family.

There was no protective order on file. However, Lt. Theobald says he does not think that will impact the case. He advises anyone in any sort of domestic dispute to file a protective order and follow through with the process.
