Indiana Self-Defense: Bargersville woman turns tables on home intruder by pulling gun on him :: 10/24/2016
BARGERSVILLE, Ind. - A Johnson County woman is alive after a terrifying home invasion late Thursday night into Friday morning.
She said a man followed her into her home, fought with her, and threw her down on the bed. But she turned the tables on him when she picked up her husband’s gun.
Jackie Alexander’s been a registered nurse for two decades, so she’s pretty tough. And though she’s still scared, she lived to tell the story.
“For eight years I’ve felt safe enough to walk out my front door at 2 a.m. if need be,” said Alexander, “That sense of safety is gone.”
Alexander took her dog Chloe out to use the bathroom around midnight. Her husband was at work, and she was home alone. She said she saw a man walking down the sidewalk, and then he came into her yard.
“I put my hand up and said, stop, excuse me. He did not stop,” she said.
She tells us she tried to close the door, but the man hit it. A struggle ensued in the living room, continuing into the hallway.
“He’s in my space. It was clear that he had intent,” she said, “I don’t know if his intent was money or rape or murder. I just knew that he had very bad intentions, and I was scared.”
She said the man got her on the bed and tried to take her clothes off.
“I could not imagine laying there and letting this man control me,” she said.
Alexander fought back.
“I kicked the hell out of him… I pulled my leg back, and I kicked him dead in his chest as hard as I could," she said.
The move gave her enough time to grab a gun nearby.
“I pulled the gun from the case, flipped the safety, sat up, pointed it, and shot twice,” she said.
The man ran away, likely not hit. Bullet holes remain in clothes in the closet and walls.
She ran to a neighbor's house for help, and said she’s grateful for her life but hoping police get the guy.
She also spoke up to warn neighbors to lock doors and take steps to say safe.
“If I didn’t have a gun, there was nothing but me underneath him, struggling to keep him from causing harm,” she said.
An investigator with Bargersville police told us Friday afternoon they did remove evidence from the home.
They believe the suspect in the case is an African-American or Hispanic man, wearing a long gray coat and a ski mask.
The detective said law enforcement officers will be out canvassing the neighborhood over the weekend talking to people that live there. Multiple law enforcement officers actually live in the neighborhood as well.
