Illinois Self-Defense: Shooting On Joliet's Far West Side Leaves Man Hospitalized :: 03/17/2020

JOLIET, IL — A 35-year-old man getting ready to leave for work was shot in the leg around 3:35 a.m. Monday in a far west side subdivision, Joliet's police said. The man told police he was shot after being confronted by two masked men who showed up at his property.

Joliet police say the man's injuries are not life-threatening, and he is hospitalized at the Amita Health Saint Joseph Medical Center. Shortly after the shooting, three people were taken into police custody for questioning.

The shooting happened in the 2700 block of Arches Drive, police said.

"Officers were able to determine that the victim had started his vehicle by using his remote start," Joliet police said. "The victim then exited his residence and opened the door of his vehicle to leave for work. When the victim opened the door, he was approached by two (people) wearing masks, one with a gun."

The 35-year-old man tried to run away and that's when one of the masked men fired several rounds of ammunition at him, hitting the man's leg, police say. The man, who had a concealed carry license, fired back at the two masked men, who got away by getting into vehicles waiting for them, police said.

Minutes later, patrol officers spotted one of the suspected getaway vehicles driving westbound on Caton Farm Road near Ruth Fitzgerald Drive. When officers turned on their squad car's sirens and flashing lights, the driver refused to stop, according to police.

Officers remained in pursuit until the vehicle turned south along the West Frontage Road. The vehicle was trapped because the driver pulled into a dead-end road, police said. Moments later, the three people inside the fleeing vehicle were taken away by police.

As of Monday evening, Joliet's Police Department had not identified the three suspects who were taken into custody earlier in the morning.

"This is still an ongoing investigation at the time of this press release. More information will be released at a later time when it becomes available," police said.
