How Erie City (PA) Council members believe we should address community violence :: 07/20/2015

The Erie Times-News recently asked all seven members of Erie City Council the same question: "What should be local officials' top focus when it comes to reducing violence in our community?"

Here is what they had to say:

Council President David Brennan

"The focus needs to be, somehow, reaching out to our at-risk youth. I don't necessarily think policing is the only answer. Somehow, reaching out to the people who feel they have no hope for the future, with different programs, is what we need to do."

Councilwoman Jessica Horan-Kunco

"The biggest thing is getting the guns off the streets. Maybe there's a way to even get family members of kids involved with something to come in and turn in guns. Things like that. We need a program to get the guns."

Councilman Curtis Jones Jr.

"You can't legislate the stuff that happens, and public safety is responsive in nature. But the city can begin to look at groups that are having success and help empower them to do what they do best. We can pull groups together and say, 'let's figure this out together.'"

Councilman Cas Kwitowski

"To me, it's very simple. The community needs to take responsibility. The parents, all of us. We all have to buy into the mission and get involved to solve the problem."

Councilman Bob. E. Merski

"We need to get the guns off the street. That's number one, and that's where our focus should be. People need to feel safe in this community."

Councilman Jim Winarski

"We need to bring the community together to see what can be done. It's going to take everybody pulling together."

Councilman Mel Witherspoon

"I think the main focus should be on improving the community-police relationship. More police officers in the community, to make the neighbors feel comfortable, especially in the high-crime areas."
