Hollywood Action Stars Who Support Gun Control :: 03/24/2015

Some of Hollywood’s most popular action stars love shooting fictional villains, but they also love gun control. When not entertaining audiences with thrills and chills from firepower, they can open up about their feelings on reducing gun violence.

Liam Neeson, who plays a gun-toting rescuer in the “Taken” movie series, said it’s “terrifying” that the number of guns in America roughly matches the number of people in the country. “It is the right to bear arms which is the problem,” he told Radar magazine.

Neeson praised British authorities for banning private ownership of handguns in the United Kingdom following the 1996 school shooting that killed 16 children in Dunblane, Scotland. America’s Founding Fathers “would be turning n their graves with embarrassment” if they knew how the Second Amendment was now being interpreted, he said.

Academy-Award winner Michael Douglas does what he can to help control small arms and large arms. Although firearms have been prominently featured in some of his films, such as “Black Rain” and “Falling Down,” Douglas became an advocate for gun control following John Lennon’s murder in 1980. He was three blocks away when the tragedy occurred, he said.

Douglas takes his arms control efforts steps further, involving himself in United Nations campaigns for arms disarmament.

Jamie Foxx, star of “Django Unchained,” appeared with other celebrities in the “Demand a Plan” public service announcement following the 2012 elementary school shootings that killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut. Foxx and the other gun control advocates demanded a plan from leaders to end gun violence.

Many fans of Sylvester Stallone are surprised to learn that the “Rambo” legend is a big backer of gun control. He called for a ban on assault weapons after the Newtown school massacre, asking, “Who needs an assault weapon?”

Stallone’s passion for gun control escalated after his friend, “Saturday Night Live” comedian Phil Hartman, was shot dead in 1998. He even took on the Second Amendment, claiming it’s not needed because “it’s not 200 years ago” and that the rest of the world doesn’t have it.

Star of “The Terminator” and “Commando,” Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed his support for the Second Amendment, but he noted gun owners have responsibilities. As he campaigned for governor of California, an election he eventually won, Schwarzenegger explained he supported the Brady Bill with its tightened gun control laws and stricter regulations on gun shows. “I’m for gun control. I’m a peace-loving guy,” he said.
