Hillary: Gun Control #1 Priority Of A Clinton Administration :: 04/27/2015

Speaking at a fifteen thousand a dollar plate fund-raiser in Washington D.C. Hillary Clinton laid out her vision of a Clinton presidency to a group of potential backers drawn from the ranks of America’s most powerful liberal elite. Among the laundry list of liberal policy prescriptions and agendas discussed came Clinton’s proclamation that firearm violence, and more specifically firearm control, will be the foremost domestic priority of her first term in office.

Clinton’s comments regarding a renewed push for stricter gun control measures target a democratic base that is increasingly vocal in its desire for far harsher gun regulations. Many democratic voters have been critical of President Obama’s refusal to move strongly on the issue in the wake of national tragedies like the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary and the continued historically high murder rate that they claim is driven by the ease of acquiring a gun. In making gun control a centerpiece of her policy agenda Clinton stands to both appease her base and combat widespread concerns that she is a centrist who will not embrace the progressive values of her party.

Though Hillary’s comments on the need for more stringent gun regulations did not contain any specific policy objectives they were nonetheless strongly worded. She told the gathered crowd that “the proliferation of semi-automatic weapons among the general populace presents a grave danger to the stability and continuity of governance in our nation”. Later in her remarks she expressed the belief that a federal framework needed to be emplaced which would supersede the patchwork of existing state regulations and policies in regards to registration and sales of firearms. She explained that the consistency of a federal framework would end the exploitation of the weak gun laws present in some states to fuel the sale and use of illegal weapons nationally.

The move to emphasise gun control could end up being as much of a liability in the general election as it is a benefit in the primary. The possibility that Clinton’s harsh stance on the need for new gun control measures could galvanize opposition to the former secretary of state. Even if she attempts to walk back her rhetoric after securing the democratic nomination the damage may already have been done. Americans are notoriously prickly when it comes to politicians interfering with their second amendment rights.
