Hillary win will energize anti-gunners :: 02/29/2016
Yesterday’s big win for anti-gun Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton in South Carolina will energize the gun prohibition lobby, which started exploiting the shootings in Kansas and Washington Friday afternoon.
Clinton clobbered socialist Democrat Bernie Sanders, and the Christian Science Monitor today is pointing to exit polls that revealed “81 percent of voters prioritized reducing gun violence.” But this story somehow doesn’t square with what The State reported the other day, asserting, “Democratic voters in Saturday’s primary say gun control is not a top issue.”
Well, which is it? Democrats either are, or aren’t ready to roll for tougher gun laws. A look at the stories shows that these people “support the Second Amendment…but…”
They might be the sort of people swayed by Friday afternoon’s email blast from Renee Hopkins at the Alliance for Gun Responsibility. She didn’t beat around the bush, going straight for the emotional jugular, telling recipients, “Seven innocent lives have been taken by gun violence in separate incidents in Kansas and Washington.”
“Our legislators all over the country must act to give law enforcement the resources and tools to keep guns out of dangerous hands,” the message says. But that’s the same thing gun control advocates said when they pushed laws prohibiting felons from having guns, and against supplying guns to criminals.
In Kansas, those laws didn’t prevent Cedric Ford, a man with a criminal history, from getting guns. But those same laws have allowed charges to be filed against the woman who allegedly provided those guns to Ford. There will be no trial for the gunman, of course, because he was fatally shot by Hesston Police Chief Doug Schroeder.
“Our movement is going to keep up the fight and we will pass Extreme Risk Protection Orders this year to save lives here in Washington,” the Hopkins message adds. But Ford was served with a protection order about a half-hour before he launched the rampage in Kansas, demonstrating that such orders are not a panacea.
Two years ago, when they were pushing Initiative 594, Evergreen State gun prohibitionists argued that so-called “universal background checks” would be a blow against crime. Yet one week ago, Seattle police fatally shot a convicted felon who they say was illegally armed with a .45-caliber pistol; an incident that has stirred some protests.
Clinton has become more of a hero to the anti-gun Left than she’s been before, by making gun control a central plank in her campaign platform. With “Super Tuesday” on the horizon, her campaign could take an insurmountable lead for Sanders.
Meanwhile, the New York Times is editorializing today that the Republican candidates are “deeply entrenched against gun controls.” That does more than just suggest the Second Amendment will be on the line in November. It could be the deciding factor for gun rights activists who, despite their social media vows right now not to vote for one or the other leading GOP candidate, may find themselves compelled by concerns over their civil rights to vote, not for a candidate, but to keep Clinton from going back to the White House.
