Gun rights issue overheard in doctor's office :: 05/25/2015
Judge Andrew Napolitano, senior legal analyst for Fox News, stated last week that Rand Paul is the only announced candidate for the White House in 2016 who faithfully adheres to the U.S. Constitution. Part of that adherence is the support for unfettered gun rights for the people, as delineated by the Second Amendment to the Constitution.
While other candidates may generally support gun rights, that support usually comes with some caveats that the Framers of the Constitution never discussed nor supported.
Despite the fact that so far in the 2016 presidential race the subject of guns has not yet been mentioned and thoroughly discussed. But it is a matter of extreme importance and urgency. And although gun rights continue to enjoy widespread support among the electorate, not everyone shares in that support. A couple of election cycles could potentially tip the scales toward more gun restrictions.
Take a conversation overheard in a doctor's office some time ago. One of the local daily newspapers had a complete front page report on a gun rally held nearby. An elderly couple sitting nearby noted the story and began talking about the rally and the issue of gun rights. It was all too obvious they were totally against the Second Amendment and the right of the people to keep and bear arms.
Apparently the man had gone to the rally to protest gun rights. The woman that I assumed to be his wife stated she wished she could have been there to help him.
"Was anyone there besides you to hold forth the cause of gun bans and restrictions?" she asked.
"Only about three others," he said. "The overwhelming majority came out to show their strong support for gun rights. So we were severely outnumbered."
"Was that Martin fellow there?" she asked. "Not the one in the legislature but the conservative writer for the Examiner?"
"Yes he was there," he said.
"He just grates on my nerves about this stuff," she quipped. "I wish I could have been there to confront his little ignorant self."
Knowing that from time to time I encounter people like this, I was dressed casually in a hat and dark sunglasses. The sunglasses are needed due to my eye problem, but the hat? When I saw that the old battle ax was on warpath and had me in her sights, I pulled down the rim of the hat a bit closer to the top of my glasses. I didn't feel up to a confrontation that day.
These people are out there in larger numbers than most of us realize -- even in the south. And they are still determined to whittle away at our gun rights little by little until one day, no matter how long it takes, that freedom will be gone along with many others deemed to be obsolete.
