Gun Owners of America: Obama's SCOTUS Nominee Consistently Votes Against the 2nd Amendment :: 03/30/2016

In an interview about President Barack Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Judge Merrick Garland, Gun Owners of America Executive Director Emeritus Larry Pratt explained that Garland has consistently voted against “an individual right to keep and bear arms,” and although Obama calls him “a moderate,” Garland is a moderate only in the sense that the “Kremlin” has some “moderates.”

On the March 23 edition of TruNews, host Rick Wiles asked Pratt, “Judge Garland’s most important judicial vote on the D.C. Court of Appeals involved the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. What were the details of that vote?”

Pratt said, “Well, to put it in technical, lawyer-ese, he was trying to stick it to the Heller, to what became known as the Heller decision. He voted against Dick Heller. He voted against the idea that any citizen of the District of Columbia has an individual right to keep and bear arms.”

“And this is the guy that has been told to us by many folks, including the president, that, ‘this is a moderate,’” said Pratt.  “Well, I guess in the Kremlin there are moderates but that’s not the kind of moderate we need on the Supreme Court.”

Wiles then asked, “He voted twice, right, against citizens of the District of Columbia owning and possessing firearms?”

“He also voted to uphold Bill Clinton’s registration scheme in an earlier decision,” said Pratt, “so his track record is consistent and it’s one of opposition to the Second Amendment.”

Wiles further asked, “Larry, if Judge Garland is on the Supreme Court, then what is the balance of power, as far as Second amendment gun issues that come before the court?”

Pratt said, “Well, judicially, it’s in a heap of trouble. Happily, the Second Amendment is all about people like Judge Garland, so there is a limit to how far he can go, I think.”

Merrick Garland, who is the chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, was nominated to the Supreme Court by Obama to replace Justice Antonin Scalia, who died in February.

According to its website, Gun Owners of America “is a national grassroots organization representing more than 1.5 million Americans dedicated to promoting their Second Amendment freedom to keep and bear arms.”
