Gun Free Zone Fails Again on Campus :: 02/22/2018

If you’re like me, then you hate the idea of a madman hurting our children. Unfortunately, it has been happening for a long time, but probably not the way you think. We’ve had “gun free” zones on campuses for almost three decades. Somehow we lost our outrage when guns were used in these so called “gun free” zones. If a criminal can bring a firearm onto college campus to rob our students, then what is to stop a madman from doing the same thing..or worse. Here are the latest examples.

  • Earlier this month, a University of California Berkeley student was robbed at gunpoint next to his on-campus housing unit. The four armed robbers got away even though the robbery occurred in broad daylight.
  • Two groups of students were robbed at the University of California/Los Angeles. They were robbed by two men who had knives and guns. These attacks occurred in the gun free zone around the campus and around the nearby hospital. The students were robbed and threatened, but not physically injured.
  • Another man was shot on the University of California campus in San Francisco. Two men pulled out guns and shot the suspect even though the location was next to City Hall. Both the campus and government buildings are “gun-free zones” where honest gun owners are disarmed.

These gun-free zones clearly failed to protect our students. I chose examples from California for a reason. Not only are campuses “gun free” zones, but the counties where these attacks occured are effectively “gun-free” as well. Honest men and women can’t get a license to legally carry a firearm in those counties. California has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. They have gun-free zones around schools, firearms registration, and mandatory background checks. Clearly, that hasn’t stopped criminals from using guns to victimize 19 and 20 year olds on campus.

These gun laws at least accomplished one thing. They disarmed the older students and staff who could protect themselves off campus. If these people are vulnerable, then you can imagine how easy it is to hurt our elementary, junior high, and highschool students.

Gun-free zones are an exercise in fantasy. Consider this if you doubt me. The first thing students and staff do when they are in danger is call a good guy with a gun. Now would be a good time to get rid of gun-free zones across the country. Let honest citizens protect themselves and those they love.
