Georgia Self-Defense: Kick, Kick, Boom! Elderly Homeowner Stops Criminal Cold :: 09/15/2016

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said an intruder was shot and killed in self defense as he attempted to break into the home of an elderly man in Augusta, GA.

The man killed was identified by authorities as Anthony James Lawson, 40, of 3411 Charing Cross Road, of Augusta. He was shot at a residence in the 2400 block of Wrightsboro Road and pronounced dead at 3:38 a.m., Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said.

The resident, Joseph Patterson, 69, told sheriff’s investigators that Lawson attempted to kick open the front door of the home and then pushed a window air conditioner out to get inside. Patterson then shot Lawson with a handgun, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

Patterson said he did not know the man trying to break into his home and dialed 9-1-1 as soon as Lawson started kicking in his front door. Authorities say Lawson’s body was found inside the residence and the homeowner is not being charged with any crime stemming from the incident.

Lawson was convicted in Richmond County in 2003 of reckless conduct by an HIV-infected person. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was later paroled in 2010 to Richmond County. While on probation, Lawson was charged with and convicted of disorderly conduct and theft by taking and public drunkenness.

Yet another instance where a criminal should have still been behind bars serving his sentence instead of being allowed to terrorize his community. How’s that criminal justice reform workin for ya?
