Georgia Self-Defense Shooting-Concealed Carrier in Georgia Uses Handgun to Stop Robber Armed With Rifle :: 08/25/2014

A concealed carrier in Georgia is being heralded by police today after he opened fire on an armed robber. Police say the man's actions likely lead to an arrest.

It all went down at a Gamestop store in Macon, GA. Tim Jackson, the concealed carrier, was there to buy a game for his son. Things went wrong when a man armed with a rifle that Jackson described as an "assault rifle" walked in and robbed the place.

Jackson, fearing that the man might become violent with other people or rob another store, ran to his car where his gun was stored. According to WMAZ, this is what happened next,

Jackson says he met eyes with the suspect, and says Javon Britton appeared to reach for his gun.

Jackson says that's when he fired his first shot.

He tells us he wasn't aiming for the suspect, but rather trying to hit the windows in case the car got away. He says he thought it might be an easier find for the police.
Jackson was right, the car veered off the road nearby and was easily identified by police. Both Jackson and a female suspect that was with him were taken into custody.
This is the 73rd defensive gun use we've documented in the state of Georgia and the 1,267th defensive gun use we've documented overall.

This incident is the one of the most common types of defensive gun uses. That is, one in which no one was actually shot. Despite this being one of the most common types of defensive gun uses, these incidents are often not included in statistics about defensive gun uses. Many of these statistics and studies focus solely on justifiable homicides, which represent only a fraction of total defensive gun uses.

Jackson says all he could think of were his wife and kids at home, saying his life flashed before his eyes.

He tells us the robber was only a few feet away, and he could make out that the robber was holding an assault rifle.

Jackson says he bought a gun several years ago to protect his family when his wife got pregnant. He says he's had a carry permit for over six years.

When the suspect started to walk out of the store, Jackson said, one thing went through his mind, "I don't want him to do this to anyone else."

Jackson followed him out of the store, and got to his own car where he kept his gun. He says he got his gun and started looking for Britton.

Jackson says he met eyes with the suspect, and says Britton appeared to reach for his gun.

Jackson says that's when he fired his first shot.

He tells us he wasn't aiming for the suspect, but rather trying to hit the windows in case the car got away. He says he thought it might be an easier find for the police.

Throughout the entire robbery Jackson says Britton was extremely calm. This made him think this robbery wasn't his first time.
