Florida Self-Defense: Woman shot boyfriend to death in self-defense, Casselberry cops say :: 12/11/2020

A woman is unlikely to face criminal charges after she shot her boyfriend to death during a domestic violence incident in west Casselberry on Wednesday morning, according to police.

The woman shot her boyfriend, 29-year-old Tyrone Augustus Benjamin, at their home in the 1500 block of Carlisle Drive shortly before 8:30 a.m. He also shot her in the forearm, Casselberry police said.

The Casselberry Police Department declined to identify the woman.

According to police, the woman and Benjamin were having an argument when he pinned her against the bed and put a gun to her head before trying to suffocate her with a pillow.

The woman was able to break free and grabbed a gun from the bottom shelf of a nightstand. She ran away, then shot him in the chest as he came after her, police said.

After she ran outside, Benjamin came out and shot her in the left forearm with his gun, police said. She fired several shots in return, hitting him in the chest, then went to a neighbor’s house, where a man called 911.

The woman ran back into the house and tried to stop Benjamin from bleeding, according to police.

“She’s screaming that he could be dead because she shot him at a close range,” the 911 caller said. “I heard a lot of shots. ... Oh my God she’s losing her mind over there.”

Casselberry police Chief Larry Krantz said, after consulting with the Seminole-Brevard State Attorney’s Office, it appears the woman acted in self-defense and charges are unlikely to be filed.

“This case was investigated with support from the State Attorney’s office and while there remain a few details to review, we do not believe the outcome will change based on the evidence,” he said in a statement.
