Florida Self-Defense: Wal-Mart employee shoots would-be robber dead, police say :: 09/15/2016

A Wal-Mart employee shot and killed a man who apparently attempted to rob him early Wednesday in the parking lot outside the store near University Drive and Oakland Park Boulevard, police said.

"Investigators believe this was an attempted robbery and the employee fired in self-defense," said Sunrise Police Officer Chris Piper.

Piper said the employee, who may have gone out to his car during a break on the overnight shift, "was approached by unknown male, armed with handgun" in the parking lot of the 24-hour store at 3306 N. University Drive.

"He points the weapon at the employee, and there is an exchange of words," Piper said. "The Wal-Mart employee, who has a permit, pulls out a weapon and fires multiple rounds."

Police have not released the names of the store employee or the dead person.

On the scene, however, Nastashia Jones identified the store employee as her brother, Ervin Jones, 28,

"We got a text this morning letting us know what was going on," said Jones, of North Miami. "I thought my brother was dead, but they said it was the other person."

Ervin Jones has a concealed weapons permit, his sister said.

A portion of the parking lot was cordoned off by police. Behind a white sedan a blue tarp surrounded the body of the man who was killed.

Nastashia Jones said her brother's girlfriend, who also works at the Walmart, sent the text message informing her of the shooting.

That girlfriend, wearing a blue Wal-Mart vest and seen with investigators, declined comment.

Ervin Jones began working at the store about two months ago, his sister said.

"I'm sorry to hear what happened to the victim, but my brother works hard…to take care of him and his child," she said.

Ervin Jones has a 2-year-old son, his sister said.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing, police said.
