Florida Self-Defense: Man who fired shot in Brunswick barber shop robbery had to flee barber's return fire :: 08/08/2016

BRUNSWICK | A man suspected of robbing a Brunswick barber shop Saturday learned that barbers sometimes have more at hand than talcum powder and scissors.

Barbers Jason Pettibone, left, and Ronald Green, the owner of Unique Styles Barber & Salon in Brunswick, talk about being robbed at gunpoint Saturday afternoon while there were children in the shop getting back to school haircuts. Thanks to residents who helped police, a suspect was caught.

The suspect fired one shot at a barber who followed him out the door and then fled the barber’s return fire and was unable to escape the eyes of residents who showed police which way the man in the maroon pants had run.

About 3:50 p.m. Saturday, a man wearing a mask, hood and maroon pants came into Unique Styles Barber & Salon in the 1000 block of K Street, pointed a pistol at owner Ronald Green’s head and said, “You know what time it is. Give it up,’’ the Brunswick police said in a release.

Green said he immediately handed the hooded man all the money in his pocket as did Jason Pettibone who cuts hair in the chair next to Green’s.

“When he first walked through the door, we thought it was kind of strange coming in here with a hoodie on,’’ Pettibone said.

It was drizzling a little outside, so they gave him the benefit of the doubt until he pulled out a .45 caliber pistol, pointed it at Green’s head and demanded money, Green and Pettibone said.

Once he had the money, he turned went out the door and, when he saw that Pettibone had followed him out, fired a shot over his shoulder as he jogged away, Pettibone said.

He likely didn’t count on Pettibone being armed.

“When he fired the shot, I fired back at him. I thought I had hit him because he fell, but he got up and started running,’’ he said.

As the suspect ran through several city blocks, resident who had seen him flagged down police and put them on his trail, police said.

Officer Nicole Walker saw a man with clothing matching that of the suspect, and Sgt. Donald Babbin and his police dog Enzo tracked the suspect to a vacant house in the 1900 block of Stonewall Street about six blocks from the barber shop. After several commands, the suspect surrendered from his hiding place under the house and police recovered money, a firearm and a hood, police said.

Trenton McDaniel, 17, was in the Glynn County jail Monday charged with two counts of armed robbery, three counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime.

Both said they’re glad things turned out the way they did because the place was full of fathers and their children as was the adjoining room that was packed with mothers and children. With school starting Thursday, parents are bringing their children in to get ready for the first day, they said.

“I’m just grateful nobody came to the door or came from that side,’’ Pettibone said indicating the salon.

“He was real nervous,’’ Green said. “He would have shot somebody.”

One man who left with his son during he excitement came back later to pay for his haircut.

“He said, ‘Y’all always clowning so much in here, I thought y’all was playing until the shooting started,’’’ Green said.

Green said the nearby citizens and customers seemed to take it personally.

“I’ve been in this shop since 1999,’’ he said. “Ain’t nothing ever happened here.”

Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to call detective Alan Wainright at (912) 279-2621.
