Florida Self-Defense: Jacksonville police: Man shoots and kills alleged intruder in Westside neighborhood :: 05/24/2019

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UPDATE, 5/24/19, 10 p.m.: The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has identified the man who they say was killed trying to break into a home on the Westside on Friday afternoon.

Demetrile Davis, 37, was shot and killed by a man who said Davis broke into his home in the 7600 block of Pilgrims Trace Drive.

The victim told police he heard someone knocking loudly at his front door while ringing the doorbell about 15 times. While he was going to the front door, he heard someone at the screen door at his back porch, JSO said. He said he saw a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

He then told police he went to his bedroom to get his firearm, then went to the hall. He said he was starting to call 911 when the front door of his home was kicked open and he heard someone enter the home, JSO said. When he peeked around the corner, he was face to face with Davis and shot him several times out of fear, police said.

Davis then ran out of the home while the victim continued calling 911. When police arrived, they found 18-year-old Christopher Mangham attempting to revive Davis. Davis, who was also wearing surgical rubber gloves, was pronounced dead by rescue personnel.

Police said Davis had several out-of-state arrests for breaking and entering and burglary.

Mangham was arrested on suspicion of felony murder and burglary. JSO said he has a prior arrest in Duval County from July 2017 for auto theft.

Original story below:

A man is dead after allegedly trying to break into someone’s home.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it started with a 911 call from someone claiming he shot an intruder.

A home at the intersection of North Dover Cliff Drive and Pilgrims Trace Drive became a crime scene Friday afternoon.

“You don’t see the cops unless there’s ambulances or firetrucks. This was, like, a shocker,” said neighbor Ashley Robinson.

It was right around 12:40 p.m. when the 911 call came in.

Robinson said she saw the home that police had surrounded.

“Right behind us, the house I drove by, and you could see where the door the whole frame was kicked into the door,” said Robinson.

Homicide Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said the first officers arrived about 10 minutes after the 911 call and found a man on the ground with at least one gunshot wound.

The man, whom JSO said was about 30 to 40 years old, died on the roadway.

“We believe there was an attempt of an active criminal act when he was shot,” said Rudlaff.

Moments later, two visibly upset women pulled up, appearing to say that the person who was killed was their family member. Two detectives spoke to them before they left.

JSO said it doesn’t have any information that the people involved in this case knew each other but said that is still under investigation.
