Florida Self-Defense: Attempted robber shot, killed by Miramar restaurant employee :: 12/24/2015

The attempted armed robbery happened at Captain Max Seafood Restaurant in Miramar.

Police said a masked man armed with a gun entered the restaurant shortly before 6 p.m. After a verbal exchange with an employee, the employee pulled a gun, fired and killed the man attempting to rob the store.

It's unclear if both men fired weapons.

Police identified the robbery suspect Thursday as 26-year-old Roosevelt Jones. They said a second person may have been involved in the attempted robbery.

A man who only wanted to be identified as Sam told Local 10 News reporter Terrell Forney that he was in the drive-thru of the restaurant at the time of the shooting.

"It was like four gunshots and I'm thinking, OK, it's like firecrackers," Sam said.  "I was the first car in the window and the girl that was giving me the food had her hand over her ear and she bent down."

The owner of the Adam & Eve Hair Salon next door told Local 10 News that a suspicious man came into her business earlier in the day and seemed to be casing the property.

"I kindly went outside, opened the door and let him out," Shirley Wagnac said. "About two hours later, that's when I heard what happened at Captain Max."

Detectives said cameras inside the restaurant did not capture the incident.

At least one customer was inside the restaurant at the time, but no one else was injured.

The restaurant was reopened for business on Thursday.

Jones was released from state prison on Oct. 8 after serving time for armed carjacking and fleeing from a law enforcement officer.
