Florida Self-Defense: Armed resident scares off burglar in Cape Coral :: 02/11/2017

A burglar attempting to enter a Cape Coral home via its lanai found himself face-to-face with an armed resident and fled the home only to be captured by police.

Officers responded to a burglary in progress in the 100 block of SW 22nd Court around 1:30 a.m. Friday. When they arrived, Jim Gibbons told them the would-be burglar was scared away by a revolver. He gave officers a description of the suspect and eventually a barking dog tipped them off to the suspect’s location.

Cape police arrested Jacob Cintra, 20, for two counts of burglary after law enforcement discovered Cintra broke into the Gibbon's car before attempting to break into the home.

"I yelled to my wife, 'Go get the gun!'" Gibbons told NBC2, describing the moment he saw Cintra on the lanai.

"I was opening the blinds. As I opened the blinds, he's standing ... like about this far away from me."

That's when Gibbons' wife leveled the gun at Cintra, who was attempting to break in.

"She said if he had been fiddling with the door, trying to open it, she would have shot him."

Neighbors are glad to know the Gibbons took swift action.

"That's cool that we still have the Second Amendment for that," said David Jean-Jacques.

Gibbons knows things could have been much worse if not for their fearless furry friends.

"Did you tell them you're the hero? Yeah, you're the hero," Gibbons said to his dog, Gabby.

Gibbons said their dogs got extra treats as a reward.

Cintra is still in the Lee County Jail, accused of burglary and damaging property.

"He's lucky. He's pretty dumb and he's lucky," Gibbons said.
