When it comes to a case of self-defense, you have to think fast.

"When your life is threatened I think everybody would agree that is your first priority is to protect your life," Tom Henderson said.

Henderson is an Assistant District Attorney in Shelby County. He told FOX13 the District Attorney’s office is familiar with self-defense cases. People fight back against criminals who are attacking them.

"We have reviewed several homicides this year that involved the possible justifiable use of deadly force,” Henderson said. “Although they have seem to be a rashes here lately I don't think this year is any worse than previous years.”

In just the last three months we've reported about three self-defense shootings.

In May a Frayser man took matters in his own hands shooting a man after he broke into his home through a window.

That same month Calvert Evans was ambushed by two men in front of the Family Dollar on Lamar. He says he managed to get his gun and fight back even though he was shot several times.

And Wednesday night, police responded to the shooting at the Lamar Corner Grocery store. The victim shot and killed the robber. Police say he then drove away and called 911.

"The law in Tennessee says you're justified in defending yourself if you are reasonably forced by another,” Henderson said.
