European Union votes for stricter gun control :: 06/13/2016

Gun control is back in the news and the European Union voted to adopt stricter rules regarding the buying and selling of semi-automatic weapons (including the prohibition of weapons that could be converted to automatic mode), measures to stop deactivated guns from being put back in use and improved tracking of trafficked weapons, and overall tighter controls on sales of guns over the internet.

While the measures set a minimum standard for member nations to respect, it does not stop any of them from putting their own tougher regulations into effect. However, European Union lawmakers must endorse the rules before their take effect.

The new agreement comes as a direct response to the deadly attacks in Paris, including the massacre at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebo in January 2015, as well as the massacre on November 13, which killed 130 people, along with the terrorist attack in Brussels earlier this year.

While the move was welcomed by such international leaders as French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve and Dutch Justice Minister Ard van der Steur, who stated that "the risk of legal firearms finding their way to the illegal market is reduced, Countries that are home to many hunters, like the Czech Republic, reportedly resisted the move.
