THE city rocked by the killing of 11-year-old Rhys Jones more than a decade ago has witnessed an explosion in gun violence.

Seven shootings took place in Liverpool over a 17-day period last month, it has emerged.

Tragic schoolboy Rhys, 11, was gunned down by a teenage hoodlum as he walked home from a football kickabout in Liverpool in 2007

Two men died and two others were injured.

Police say the attacks are unrelated but communities are fearful.

The Sun can reveal active gangs include the Kirkstone Riot Squad and Linacre Young Guns in Sefton — as well as the Fern Hill Road and Stanley Road gangs.

One ex-detective said: “Street gangs run cannabis farms and some will sell crack cocaine and heroin. Shootings are often about protecting their market.”

Detectives say the attacks are unrelated but the shootings have left communities fearful and led to police increasing patrols last month
