Employee of 21 Years Allegedly Fired Because He Admitted He Owned a Gun :: 10/14/2014
Nino Ferlaino worked as a landscaper for a private community, Lakes of the Four Seasons, in Crown Point, Indiana. Though the community is located in Indiana, it is essentially a Chicago suburb for all intents and purposes.
Ferlaino claims in a recent lawsuit that he was fired from his two decade+ job simple because he admitted to co-workers that he owned a gun and supported the Second Amendment.
According to local media outlets,
Nino Ferlaino, who worked as a seasonal landscaping employee at LOFS for 21 years, says in a lawsuit filed Monday in Lake Circuit Court that he was confronted by a supervisor two days after he told co-workers he is a gun owner.
The supervisor, Doug Weiss, on July 2 asked Ferlaino if it was true he carried a gun, the lawsuit says. Ferlaino claims he replied he owned a gun but did not carry it on him at work.
Weiss told Ferlaino that Weiss had met with the property owners association's board of directors July 1 and that Ferlaino's conversation with his co-workers violated the company's "no tolerance policy," the lawsuit says. Ferlaino says he was fired July 2.
Keep in mind, Ferlaino is alleging that he was fired simply for owning a gun, not carrying one at work.
Even if he brought a gun to work and kept it in his car, the community would not be able to fire him under Indiana's 2011 "Bring Your Gun to Work" law, which allows employees to keep firearms in their vehicles at work without the fear of termination.
