District 165-PA GOP Rep. Bill Adolph facing deep-pocketed Democrat in election :: 08/22/2014

Political insiders have speculated whether Rep. Bill Adolph, the moderate Republican chairman of the Appropriations Committee, was angling to become the next Speaker of the House.

But Adolph's political aspirations, if they are rumors are true, may have to be put on hold.

Adolph suddenly, maybe, finds himself in the political fight of his life just to hold onto his Delaware County district seat.

Adolph, who as a resident of Springfield has represented the 165th District since 1988, was supposed to face little-known, poorly funded Democrat Jeremy Fearn in the Nov. 4 general election. But now Fearn has dropped out of the race and been replaced by Charles "Chuck" Hadley of Wayne, a wealthy retired venture capitalist who invested in small medical technology companies.

The Delaware County Republican Party is crying foul, alleging the state Democratic Party orchestrated a last minute switcheroo.

"This was a backroom deal struck by Democrat party leaders looking to reward a major donor," Delaware County GOP Chairman Andy Reilly said, adding Hadley donated more than $150,000 to Democrats this year.  "The fact that they waited until hours before the deadline to file the paperwork indicates they were trying to do this in secret.  Many residents were unaware the Fearn had even withdrawn his name from the ballot –so there was no opportunity to for other potential Democrat candidates to throw their name in the ring for consideration."
