Decline in society, not NRA, responsible for gun deaths :: 05/13/2016

Patti Brigham, first vice president of the League of Women Voters of Florida doesn't want us to "sit idly by and watch the number of gun deaths soar," so she advocates for "smart gun laws," whatever that means.

No sane person will argue that adults shouldn't keep their guns locked up and out of the reach of children. It's not surprising that the majority of citizens are against even concealed-weapons-permit holders carrying weapons on campus.

It's interesting and instructive to note that the League believes the National Rifle Association has "run amok" and is somehow responsible for this problem. The League is barking up the wrong tree. There is no greater advocate for gun safety than the NRA (I'm not a member), which, among many other initiatives, also fiercely lobbies to protect our Second Amendment rights.

Oddly though, national League president Elisabeth MacNamara recently observed "We have always actively opposed any restrictive laws that would have limited the constitutional rights of Americans." It sure doesn't look like it to me.

The League seems to come down left of center on many social issues like voter identification, Affordable Care Act, abortion and on and on. The League gets much of its support from liberal donors, such as George Soros, the Ford Foundation, Joyce Foundation and others who are strong proponents of gun control. Progressive-led cities like Washington, Baltimore and Chicago have enacted some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country, and yet they experience the worst gun violence anywhere. If more gun control is better, how can this be?

More than half a century ago, President Lyndon Johnson birthed "The Great Society," and we have ever since witnessed a steady decline in traditional family values and societal norms. No-fault divorce, abortion on demand, drugs, race-baiting politicians and attacks on religious expression have brought us to this horrendous state of affairs.

Almost 71 percent of black babies and more than 29 percent of white babies are born to unwed mothers, many of whom are teenagers themselves with no means of support other than government assistance.

In my view, fatherless family units with no money, no nurturing and no spiritual grounding have little chance of raising children to become respectable, responsible and productive adults. Is it any wonder these kids might turn to a life of crime on the streets dealing drugs and shooting each other (and us)?

We have a vastly larger and more complex set of problems to address in this country other than just gun control. The cops can't protect us, so we have to protect ourselves. It really is time to wake up, America.
