Daisy Ridley Deletes Instagram Account over Post About Gun Violence :: 08/03/2016
Without an announcement or fanfare, Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley has deleted her Instagram account. The reason appears to be the avalanche of negative comments she received on a post about gun violence. Jill Pantozzi from the Nerdy Bird originally reported the social disappearance and points out that Ridley often cross-posts between Instagram and Facebook.
Since the latter platform is still active, the message that she posted after Sunday’s Teen Choice Awards is still available, as are its 380-plus comments.
Responding to a segment of the show that brought the teen family members of the Orlando, Newtown, and San Bernardino shooting victims on stage, Ridley wrote:
Thinking about how lucky I am like . . . Serious bit: as I sat in the audience yesterday tears were streaming down my face at the tribute to those that have been lost to gun violence. I didn’t get a great picture of the incredible group that came on stage but they were so brave. It was a true moment of togetherness. We must ‪#stoptheviolence
The comments section on Facebook is aflame with arguments for and against gun control, though the mudslinging is not necessarily directed at Ridley. It’s mostly the usual flaming quagmire of commenter-on-commenter savagery. Because it’s a comments section though, many users do take shots at the actress, like this one: “Says the woman who kills people with guns in movies. Such hypocrisy in Hollywood. Just shut up, Ridley, and make another Star Wars movie.”
Since Ridley’s Instagram is no longer with us, the reason for deleting the page is not totally clear, but we’ve reached out to her camp for confirmation. She’s used the platform to post about topics close to her before, like Internet criticism for how she looks and her struggles with endometriosis and polycystic-ovary syndrome earlier this summer.
The ripple effect of this mysterious departure has hit her Star Wars co-star John Boyega’s Instagram. Ridley fans have flooded his posts demanding to know where she went and when she’ll be back. According to screenshots from an eagle-eyed Tumblr user, John responded to two fans, telling one of them, “She’s doing what’s best for her. I won’t be advising my friend to come back. Sorry.” And another, “Can’t do that. She make her own decisions and as a friend I support her right to.” At the time of publishing, Oscar Isaac has not commented, nor have Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Domhnall Gleeson.
