Gun owners with concealed carry permits from 25 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands will be allowed to carry their weapons in Wisconsin when the state's law legalizing concealed weapons goes into effect on Nov. 1.

The law comes as a proposal to allow reciprocity nationwide is being considered in the U.S. Congress, which could allow gun owners with permits to carry firearms in 49 states. Currently only Illinois bans concealed firearms.

The states are listed on an updated web page on the state Justice Department's website that provides information about new policies regarding concealed carry of firearms, including training requirements, which have drawn strong criticism from the National Rifle Association.

The Department of Justice determined which state permits would be recognized in Wisconsin based on background checks that are comparable to those required under Wisconsin's law.

Those states include: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.
