Connecticut Self-Defense: Police - Bridgeport man shot while attempting robbery :: 03/05/2015

Milford Police say a Bridgeport man was attempting an armed holdup when he was shot by one of his intended victims early Sunday.

According to police, two armed men approached a group of four people who had left Eli’s Tavern at 21 Daniel Street at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and were walking into a parking garage at 1 New Haven Avenue. In the parking garage the two men demanded the group give them their personal belongings as one of the suspects pointed a handgun at them, police said.

“The armed suspect discharged the firearm, striking one of the group members in the neck while continuing to point the firearm at the group,” police said. “In self defense, another person in the group removed his licensed firearm and returned fire, striking the armed suspect.”

The armed suspect was seriously injured, and the victim who was shot in the neck suffered minor injuries, police said.

The second robbery suspect fled the scene on foot, and police are still looking for him.

Both the wounded suspect and the victim were transported to a local hospital. The victim was treated for his injuries and later released from the hospital.

The wounded suspect, who is still listed in serious condition, is identified as Rumone Richard, 23, of 268 Wayne Street in Bridgeport.

Richard is charged with the following offenses and is being held on a $500,000 bond.

• Criminal attempt to commit murder

• Criminal attempt to commit robbery 1st degree, four counts

• Conspiracy to commit robbery 1st degree

• Criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

• Possession of a stolen firearm

• Unlawful discharge of a firearm

• Assault 1st degree

Police recovered two firearms at the crime scene.

According to Milford Police Spokesman Jeff Nielsen, the victim who suffered minor injuries after being shot in the neck is 37 years old, and the other members of his group were in their mid-twenties. They are not Milford residents, Nielsen said.

The intended victim who shot the robber does not face any charges “at this time,” Nielsen said, noting that the state attorney’s office determined that the man acted in self defense.

Police are continuing their investigation and ask anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact the Milford Police Department Detective Division at 203-877-1465, email tbassett@ci.milford.ct.us  or visit milfordpd.org and click on “Crime Tips” to report the information.
