Colorado Self-Defense: Coroner identifies Loveland woman shot in weekend custody dispute; death ruled homicide :: 03/02/2021

The Larimer County coroner has identified the woman killed in a custody dispute over the weekend as 52-year-old Cherri Trahan of Loveland.

According to a release from the coroner’s office, the autopsy performed by Larimer County Coroner James Wilkerson IV found the manner of death to be homicide and the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds.

Loveland police responded to a report of a shooting at 3:25 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Blackstone Circle. Trahan’s 50-year-old ex-husband, was taken into custody at the scene but was later released without charges.

According to a previous news release from the Loveland Police Department, witnesses told investigators that the man and woman were arguing over custody issues related to their teenage son when the woman “brandished a pistol and threatened to kill the male,” placing four other family members “in jeopardy.”

The release said as the man was trying to get his family safely out of the house, he retrieved a pistol and confronted Trahan. When the two began struggling, the man reportedly fatally shot the woman.

Further information about the incident, including the identity of the ex-husband and the teenage son, have not been released.
