Cohen, Democrats sign letter pushing for stronger gun laws :: 10/03/2015

A letter was sent to speaker of the house John Boehner Thursday from 147 democrats in the United States House of Representatives. The letter is asking Boehner to bring the national epidemic of gun violence to the floor

In the letter, Democrats are asking for commonsense gun laws.

Representative Steve Cohen is one of the signatures on the letter. He said the goal is to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, domestic abusers, and most importantly the dangerously mental ill.

Police said 20-year-old Christopher Mercer the man responsible for killing nine people and injuring 13 others at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. Mercer was eventually killed during a shootout with police.

“I know that we can't cure all mental illness and take care all of these problems with legislation, but we can do something with some of them,” Rep. Cohen said.

Cohen told FOX13 stricter gun regulation will also take the ability to purchase certain models away.

“Assault weapons, we shouldn’t be letting people buy,” Rep. Cohen said. “There is no reason to have an assault weapon for self-defense.”

Even with all democrats signing the letter, Cohen told FOX13 Boehner, who is stepping away from his post, still may not bring the issue to the floor.

“Unfortunately, pressure has not been successful because the NRA has such a grip on the Republican caucus and they control the house,” Cohen said.
