Car Break-Ins Lead to Stolen Guns :: 10/31/2015

Tracking a recent spike in break-ins and stolen guns in what law enforcement is calling a crime of opportunity.

Firearms are being stolen from unlocked cars in Vanderburgh County.

The Sheriff's Department reports 7 break-ins in the county over the last two months involving guns. Five have happened in the Oak Hill area, with two others happening on the west side.

Lt. Noah Robinson with the Sheriff's Dept. says a break-in happens in a matter of seconds, and leaving your car unlocked leaves you more vulnerable.

“If your firearm is in the car, it's small, portable it's going to get stolen right along with your CD player or iPod,” he says.

Deputies say a gun left in the car could put you and law enforcement in danger.

“If you interrupt the thief while he's stealing your handgun, you run the risk of being shot by your own gun,” Robinson says, “We run the risk of being shot by your handgun if we confront them after they've stolen it.”

Jacob Clark, a firearms expert at Bucks & Jakes Outfitters says it's simply “irresponsible” leaving a gun in the car.

It's simple, Robinson says, just lock your car. Officials say a locked car is more likely to be passed over by thieves.

But Clark takes safety a step farther.

“Never ever leave it overnight in your car,” he says, “I wouldn't leave it in your car just going into the gas station.”

Why? If you're carrying a firearm for self-defense, a gun in the car won't do you much good, Clark says.

Deputies say the stolen guns are on the street now – but they do have serial numbers in a national database for tracking.

The Sheriff's Department says there is a suspect in one case, but do not believe all the break-ins are connected.
