Brady group calls for Oregon sheriff to resign :: 10/05/2015

A famous gun control advocate organization wants an Oregon sheriff to resign, questioning his ability to conduct a fair investigation into last week's mass shootings at a community college there, The Oregonian reported on its OregonLive.com website.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence is calling on Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin to step down. The Oregonian said the campaign pointed to his "extremist" views on gun rights.

The Brady campaign was created in honor of James Brady, President Ronald Reagan's press secretary. He was shot in the head during Reagan's attempted assassination in 1981. Brady spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair, advocating against gun violence.

"John Hanlin is not the man for the job," Brady Campaign President Dan Gross told reporters, the newspaper said. People "need to trust that nothing is being president or withheld because of one man's extremis ideology."

The Oregonian said the sheriff could not be reached immediately for comment. But the paper said he told reporters on Friday that now was not the time to talk about his views on gun laws.

Gov. Kate Brown said it's up to local voters to decide on whether the sheriff should be in his job.

Hanlin has a history of speaking out on the subject. The Washington Post reported that in 2013, after the Sandy Hook mass shooting, Hanlin wrote the vice president "to make a formal request that you NOT tamper with or attempt to amend the 2nd Amendment. Gun control is NOT the answer to preventing heinous crimes like school shootings."

Also in the letter, the paper said, he told Biden that "any federal regulation enacted by Congress or by executive order of the President offending the constitutional rights of my citizens shall not be enforced by me or by my deputies."
