Blast from the Past: Gun law is about thugs, not suburban moms :: 03/07/2015

But suburban moms aren't the problem. Thugs, drug-gang members, violent teens, and, especially, gun traffickers are. That's why what may seem like a major inconvenience to an individual is a major boon to public safety in the Garden State.

It's no coincidence that New Jersey enjoys both the most effective handgun-purchase background check and permit system in the nation, and one of the lowest statewide rates of gun violence per capita.

The inconvenience Yant Kinney endured is a serious barrier to those potential handgun purchasers intent on making mayhem or a profit illegally supplying those who are.

Contrast this with Pennsylvania, whose weak gun laws, as described in Tom Ferrick's column, encourage the development of illegal gun-trafficking rings, much as municipalities use tax abatements to lure business.

The Keystone State's rate of gun violence far exceeds ours. Sadly, handgun traffickers operating from Pennsylvania supply the greatest portion of the guns that devastate Camden and Trenton, cities only a bridge ride from Pennsylvania's vibrant handgun black market.

Bottom line? New Jersey's handgun-purchase system works to limit gun crime, and residents overwhelmingly support it, as they have since it was instituted in 1966.
