Bill to allow loaded guns in cars without permit passes Senate committee :: 02/25/2016

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — Senate Bill 14, which will remove the requirement of a concealed carry permit to have a loaded pistol in a vehicle, passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Wednesday afternoon.

The bill was the subject of a heated public hearing last week.

Senator Vivian Figures, D-Mobile continued to be a vocal opponent.

“How do we know they are law abiding citizens if they don’t have to go in and get a permit,” she asked the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Gerald Allen.  She continued, “Okay, you don’t have to answer that. You won’t know.”

Figures went on to ask what the bill will do for citizens that they can’t already do. Allen explained that it is a second amendment issue, and that law-abiding citizens are the ones who will benefit.

“They’re not going to be the ones that create the problem,” said Allen. “They are not the ones, currently, today, in the statistics. They’re not the ones we should be concerned about. The ones we should be concerned about are those individuals that do not regard the rule of law.”

Shortly before the vote, Figures told Allen and the committee, “I think this bill is a terrible bill, and just when I think you all have gotten to the point where you can’t go any further you come up with something else that pushes the button a little further. It’s placing us more and more in harm’s way.”

Allen told CBS42 he feels confident. The bill passed the Senate last year but failed in the House of Representatives. Allen said he feels the bill didn’t get a fair hearing last year.
