Bernie Sanders Wants to Ban Guns "Used to Kill People, Exclusively" :: 01/13/2016

Bernie Sanders has been taking fire from the left by Hillary and her ilk as “soft” on the issue of gun control. Sanders, a Senator from rural Vermont, has tried push back against this assault while maintaining a cordial tone and level of understanding with the gun-owners back in his home state and across the nation.

Unfortunately, American presidential politics doesn’t allow much space for one to be “cordial” these days, especially when you find yourself caught between the bleating and paternalistic left and the proud, gun owning center-right. No, American politics calls for a much more “us and them” approach. Try to appeal to all and you will appeal to none, saying much more idiotic things than if you had just picked a side in the first place.

So, now that Bernie Sanders is rising in the polls much to the chagrin of camp Hillary, let’s revisit some recent history.

Let’s revisit what Bernie Sanders had to say about guns this summer.

Speaking to Meet the Press, Sanders said this:

Nobody should have a gun who has a criminal background, who’s involved in domestic abuse situations. People should not have guns who are going to hurt other people, who are unstable. And second of all I believe that we need to make sure that certain types of guns used to kill people, exclusively, not for hunting, they should not be sold in the United States of America, and we have a huge loophole now with gun shows that should be eliminated.

So, while taking a more conciliatory tone with “hunters” and their guns, Sanders wishes to ban the sale of firearms “used to kill people.” So, what does he mean? Does he intend to ban even those guns “used to kill people” in self-defense? Handguns? Certain shotguns? Certain rifles?

The dirty little secret is all guns can be used to kill people. That’s the point. Whether or not a person is “killed” as a matter of self-defense or murder is another question. A question both Bernie Sanders and his critics on the left wish to obscure.

At the end of the day, the 2nd Amendment wasn’t codified in order to make sure people could have the right to shoot deer or defend themselves. The 2nd Amendment is much more radical. The 2nd Amendment implies the right to shoot at the government if it taken over by tyrants.
