BENNETT: Reply from Senator Pat Toomey :: 07/15/2015

(The following are excerpts from the e-mail I received from Senator Toomey)

Dear Mr. Bennett

“Like many Pennsylvanians, I have long been a supporter of the Second Amendment. Americans have an individual right to bear arms for self-protection, hunting, and recreation my record of supporting gun owners’ rights earned me an “A” rating from the NRA. During my time in the Senate, I have continued to defend Second Amendment rights”. The Second Amendment protects a fundamental freedom of law abiding Americans.”

“It does not, however, give violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill an absolute right to access firearms..”

“As you know, in 2013, I introduced a bipartisan amendment, along with Senator Joe Manchin to the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013.” The first two parts were designed to make it more difficult for criminals and dangerously mentally ill persons to acquire firearms”.” The third part of our amendment would have provided law abiding citizens with expanded opportunities to exercise their Second Amendment Rights”.. “Contrary to some reports the amendment would not have created or enabled a national gun registry.”

That same evening I received a phone call from Theo Merkel, Policy and Research Director of the “Toomey for Senate” Campaign. We discussed Senator Toomey’s Second Amendment record and my concern with the Manchin-Toomey amendment. He pointed out to me that good law abiding citizens would not have given up any rights with his (Senator Toomey’s) amendment. I pointed out to him that illegal is illegal – how much more can illegal be? And that if his amendment was enacted prior to all of the school shootings and the shooting in South Carolina, not one life would have been saved. He thanked me for my insight and he welcomed my ideas. I did remind him of my offer to provide input for other gun related matters. I am satisfied with the timely and pertinent response from Senator Toomey’s Office, and I am now on his e-mail list.

 IN DEFENSE OF FREEDOM.
