Attorney general defends large-capacity magazine ban :: 07/25/2019

Attorney General Kwame Raoul is among 18 attorneys general who are defending California’s ban on large-capacity gun ammunition magazines.

California prohibited the making, importing and sale of large ammunition magazines — those that hold more than 10 rounds — in 2000. The state legislature and voters passed Proposition 63 in 2016, which approved enforcement of the ban.

Proposition 63 was struck down by the courts and the state is appealing.

“States have the right and responsibility to enact laws and policies that will help protect residents from gun violence,” Raoul said. “Restricting access to high-capacity magazines for guns frequently used in mass shootings is not only reasonable – it is common sense.”

Raoul is among attorneys general of Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.

The coalition is arguing that Second Amendment does not prevent states from enacting commonsense gun safety measures, states have the responsibility to prevent gun violence and protect public safety, and regulating large-capacity magazines protects the public.
