Arm yourself, America :: 12/18/2015

There have been three major “lone wolf” Islamic terror attacks inside the United States since last year.

In May 2015, two jihadists drove from Phoenix to Garland, Texas, to kill “infidels” who conducted a Muhammad cartoon-drawing contest. They were killed upon arrival by Texas law officers, who were asked to stand guard at the event.

In July, Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez killed five members of the U.S. Navy in Chattanooga, Tenn., after opening fire on a gun-free recruitment center.

Two weeks ago, Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik opened fire at a Christmas party in San Bernardino, Calif., killing 14 people.

In the wake of these domestic terror attacks, the first question always is how the federal government can do more to keep Americans safe. After all, it is the duty of the government to protect the people from foreign and domestic threats.

Should we be doing more surveillance? Are we collecting too much data and clogging the system? What more can the FBI and Homeland Security be doing to prevent these attacks?

While all are valid questions, they still don't address lone-wolf attacks, which are nearly impossible to predict.

After the Garland attack, I suggested on Fox News that Americans start accepting the reality that they need to train and arm themselves.

After San Bernardino, sheriffs across the country are urging citizens to do just that.

These attacks can occur anywhere, at anytime, and the police likely will be too far away to stop them before many people are slaughtered.

“Because of the recent attack in San Bernardino ... and across our nation, radical Islam is bringing the fight to our homeland and killing innocent citizens,” Carter County, Okla., Sheriff Milton Anthony said in a letter to constituents last week. “I am joining other sheriffs across the country urging you, as citizens of this county, to exercise your Second Amendment right to bear arms.

“I urge you, as citizens, to apply and follow the guidelines and laws to obtain your permit to carry a handgun.”

“We call for Arizona licensed concealed carry permit holders to step up and defend themselves, their families and others when faced with an armed attacker prior to law enforcement arrival,” Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu recently posted on Facebook.

“In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, there have been numerous law enforcement leaders suggesting that responsible gun owners should carry their firearms when in public and be prepared to act in the case of a terrorist attack.”

We've seen this method succeed. When self-radicalized jihadist Alton Nolen beheaded a female co-worker in the name of Allah two years ago in Oklahoma, Vaughan Foods Chief Operating Officer Mark Vaughan shot him with a rifle as he was attempting to behead another woman, saving her life and the lives of others.

We live in an age where the government can't prevent every lone wolf terror attack. When one occurs in your neighborhood, will you be ready?
